Tour Description: For travelers interested in English ceramics, and crafts generally, this is a really fantastic tour. It’s also a chance to experience urban and rural England, and encounter the hospitality and generosity of people in Cornwall. We'll visit artists in their studios making pottery, textiles, and other crafts, and have a chance to talk to them in person. You’ll eat some fantastic meals, from convenience store offerings on the go, to Michelin Star restaurants in the evenings, if you choose. The Cornish lanes and landscapes will be in full bloom of late Spring and early Summer. We’ll travel by dedicated coach with plenty of room for ourselves, our baggage, and any incidental or major purchases. If you’re interested in finding a special way to see and experience Cornwall from a unique perspective, we think you’ll have a fantastic time on this tour, as there is so much to do and see. Your guide speaks English, Danish, and Japanese, and has a lot of experience leading ceramic tours. It’s easy to have a great time and many people build lasting friendships with other travelers. At the end of the trip we’ll have a shared evening together to remember all the fantastic experiences that we’ve had.

Expect the Unexpected!

We travel in small, personal groups, and travel primarily by foot, taxi, trains. You’ll quickly see what a fun and interesting place Japan is! Everything is arranged so that you’ll have a fantastic time, and learn a lot about British ceramics, potters, and a whole lot more. On this trip, we’ll have a special focus on visiting potters, studios, gardens, and national parks like Dartmoor and Exmoor. And…you’ll also have a chance to experience Cornwall in ways that few other travelers can, because we’re going to some very unique places, which are off the beaten path of “normal” tourism in the Western tip of England. The days are designed so that we’ve got group activities part of the days, and then you’ve got time for what you’d like to do the rest of the day. Doing things together is really important, and having time to yourself for personal exploration even more so!

CORNWALL: Looking deeper into Pottery traditions, landscapes, gardens, and architecture.

On this trip, we’ll visit a broad range of studios, workshops, galleries, shops, and museums. We’ll land in Bristol, and then travel to our lodgings in Devon. We’ll have a chance to visit the studios of Nic Collins and Clive Bowen, as well as other potters in the area. We’ll have a chance to visit Dartington Hall, an interesting historical, architectural building with a significant social legacy and garden. Nearby is Dartmoor National Park, filled with neolithic monuments and historical legacies. Moving west, we’ll stop for lunch in Plymouth, and then continue on to St. Ives, where we’ll stay for three nights. Our first day there we’ll visit the Leach Pottery, and also visit John Bedding at St. Ives Ceramics, and then have dinner together in the evening. Everything is walking distance in St. Ives, and the following day travelers can choose to structure their own day, visiting perhaps the Barbra Hepworth Museum or the Tate St. Ives. Our third day there, we’ll use the bus to explore the potters living in the area surrounding the town. Don’t forget to have some Cornish Pasties along for the ride! Moving back towards Bristol, we’re invited to visit Sandy Brown at her studio, Lynmouth Pottery nearby, and will want to stop at Valley of the Rocks and Exmoor National park. Moving onto Bath, we’ll look at pottery collectives and galleries, learning about the history of one of the best preserved Roman sites in England. On the last evening, we have dinner together, to compare and remember all the different experiences that we’ve had.
