Tour Description: For travelers interested in a hands on experience with Korean Master potters, focused on Onggi and teaware techiques, it really doesn’t get any better than this. Arriving at Incheon Airport, you spend the first evening independently in Seoul, in the pottery and tea quarter, Insadong, with the night market nearby. We’ll gather and then journey by highway express bus to the Harmony Art Village and Clay Studio, which is located in the mountains, next to a river, about two hours away. Each lodging unit has it’s own kitchenette and shower, and there is a possibility for single rooms for an additional price. For the first three days, you’ll have a chance to work with and be inspired by Onggi Master Kang Kyung-Hoon in his studio, with ample time to try your hand at making and decorating onggi pots. Meals are collective, and you’ll learn a lot about Korean cooking and ingredients, as well as independent instruction in other Korean dishes such as buckwheat noodles, Korean pancakes, and fermented vegetables and drinks. In the mornings, you have a chance to experience Taekkyeon exercise together. Once you’ve explored a bit, and your work is dry, it will be loaded into a kiln and you have a chance to assist with a woodfiring in a large kiln. While you wait for the kiln to cool to unload your work, there is a day trip to Icheon Potters Village, with many traditional and modern studios, and one of Korea’s largest ceramic tool and clay supply butiques. If you’re interested in finding a special way to see and experience Korea, from several special perspectives, you’ll have a fantastic time on this tour. Your hosts speak English and Korean, and has a lot of experience with organizing international workshops and gatherings. It’s easy to have a great time and build lasting friendships with other travelers. At the end of the trip we’ll have an evening together to compare the pots that we’ve produced, and remember all the fantastic experiences that we’ve had together, before departing home via Incheon Airport, Seoul.

Doing things together is really important, and having time to yourself for personal exploration even more so!

Looking deeper into Onggi and Tea Ceramics, Mountain Living, local materials exploration, and wood fired kilns.

In many years of traveling around Korea, we’ve developed great affinity for the ceramics, architecture, cuisine, and artists there. On this trip, you’ll have a chance to work in depth with Master Potter Kang Kyung-Hoon and his friends, explore many ceramic studios near and far, learn about local food and fermentation, Korean meditative practice, and fire the work that you create in a woodfired kiln together with Kang and his colleagues. We’ll begin in Seoul, visiting the tea and ceramic shops of Insadong, and then the nearby Gwangjang Market. We’ll travel up in the mountains to experience the fresh air and flowing waters, surrounded by fantastic nature, shrines and temples. After working in clay for the first week, we’ll have a chance to visit some of the artisan studios near Samcheok, and stay a couple of nights in the area, where we’ll fire our pieces together in a wood kiln. Once we return to Harmony Art Village, while we’re waiting for the kiln to cool down, and our work to be delivered, we have some special day trips to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Icheon Ceramic Village and tool shop, and then a special time together at the Sogeum Valley and Gagyeonsa Temple, and comparing the results of the wood firing. On the last day, we’ll be able to make a final Taekkyeon experience, pack our things, and take the highway bus to Incheon Airport or Seoul City Center if you’d like a few more days to experience Korean urban culture there.
