Japan November 2026: Ceramics, Ancient Kilns, Fermentation, Food and Rural Life

DKK 36,750.00

On this ceramic adventure to Japan, you’ll have the chance to visit each of the six ancient kilns: Bizen, Shigaraki, Tokoname, Echizen, Seto, and Tamba, as well as other pottery towns. We’ll focus on understanding the unique history of ceramics produced for fermenting in these ancient communities, which supplied containers to much of Japan for making sake, shoyu, miso, indigo, pickled vegetables. During the tour, we'll encounter potters, sake brewers, restaurant owners, farmers, and everyday people. We'll visit ceramic museums, galleries, and especially studios, in urban and rural communities. In the evenings, there will be opportunities for further adventures and exploration after the sun sets, culinary and otherwise. By the end of the tour, you’re likely to have a diverse collection of fantastic objects to treasure long after you’ve returned home, to use in your own kitchen, and more likely than not the urge to take a new adventure to Japan sometime soon.
